    Investigation of the mental health and cognitive correlates of psychological decentering in adolescence.R. C. Knight, D. L. Dunning, J. Cotton, G. Franckel, S. P. Ahmed, S. J. Blakemore, T. Ford, W. Kuyken, Myriad Team, T. Dalgleish & M. P. Bennett - 2025 - Cognition and Emotion 39 (2):465-475.
The ability to notice and reflect on distressing internal experiences from an objective perspective, often called psychological decentering, has been posited to be protective against mental health difficulties. However, little is known about how this skill relates to age across adolescence, its relationship with mental health, and how it may impact key domains such as affective executive control and social cognition. This study analysed a pre-existing dataset including mental health measures and cognitive tasks, administered to adolescents in Greater London and (...)

  3. Information and ambiguity: herd and contrarian behaviour in financial markets. [REVIEW]J. L. Ford, D. Kelsey & W. Pang - 2013 - Theory and Decision 75 (1):1-15.
The paper studies the impact of informational ambiguity on behalf of informed traders on history-dependent price behaviour in a model of sequential trading in financial markets. Following Chateauneuf et al., we use neo-additive capacities to model ambiguity. Such ambiguity and attitudes to it can engender herd and contrarian behaviour, and also cause the market to break down. The latter, herd and contrarian behaviour, can be reduced by the existence of a bid-ask spread.

“Data makes the story come to life:” understanding the ethical and legal implications of Big Data research involving ethnic minority healthcare workers in the United Kingdom—a qualitative study.Robert Free, David Ford, Kamlesh Khunti, Sue Carr, Louise Wain, Martin D. Tobin, Keith R. Abrams, Amit Gupta, Ibrahim Abubakar, Katherine Woolf, I. Chris McManus, Catherine Johns, Anna L. Guyatt, Laura B. Nellums, Laura Gray, Manish Pareek, Ruby Reed-Berendt & Edward S. The aim of UK-REACH (“The United Kingdom Research study into Ethnicity And COVID-19 outcomes in Healthcare workers”) is to understand if, how, and why healthcare workers (HCWs) in the United Kingdom (UK) from ethnic minority groups are at increased risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19. In this article, we present findings from the ethical and legal stream of the study, which undertook qualitative research seeking to understand and address legal, ethical, and social acceptability issues around data protection, privacy, and information (...)

Cohort Increases in Sex with Same-Sex Partners: Do Trends Vary by Gender, Race, and Class?Mónica L. Caudillo, Jessie Ford, Paula England & Emma Mishel - 2020 - Gender and Society 34 (2):178-209.
We examine change across U.S. cohorts born between 1920 and 2000 in their probability of having had sex with same-sex partners in the last year and since age 18. Using data from the 1988–2018 General Social Surveys, we explore how trends differ by gender, race, and class background. We find steep increases across birth cohorts in the proportion of women who have had sex with both men and women since age 18, whereas increases for men are less steep. We suggest (...)

The ESRC research ethics framework and research ethics review at UK universities: rebuilding the Tower of Babel REC by REC.D. L. H. Hunter - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (11):815-820.
The history of the National Health Service research ethics system in the UK and some of the key drivers for its change into the present system are described. It is suggested that the key drivers were the unnecessary delay of research, the complexity of the array of processes and contradictions between research ethics committee (REC) decisions. It is then argued that the primary drivers for this change are and will be replicated by the systems of research ethics review being put (...)

    Thucydides' Description of the Great Plague at Athens.D. L. Page - 1953 - Classical Quarterly 3 (3-4):97-.
The nature of the Plague described by Thucydides in Book 2, chapter 49, has long been discussed both by medical and by classical scholars. Of numerous suggested identifications none has found general approval; and it is doubtful whether any opinion is more prevalent today than that the problem is insoluble. The classical scholar is handicapped by his ignorance of medical science; his medical colleague has often been led astray by translations deficient in exactitude if not disfigured by error. The difficulties (...)

David Blank presents a new translation into clear modern English of a key treatise by one of the greatest of ancient philosophers, together with the first ever commentary on this work. Sextus Empiricus' Against the Grammarians is a polemical attack on ancient Greek ideas about grammar, and provides one of the best examples of sustained Sceptical reasoning.

The Traditional Theory of Perception Comes Back to Life.D. L. C. MacLachlan - 2018 - Proceedings of the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy 75:157-161.
The causal representative theory of perception dominated theory of knowledge for hundreds of years after it was put on the map by Descartes and Locke. It is now almost extinct. How could this happen? The theory collapsed because it could not explain how we acquire knowledge of the external world, since it presupposes a causally organized system of external objects producing sensations in us. This presupposition, however, is generally recognized as true, so that the pattern of causal inference at the (...)

    The Enigma of Perception.D. L. C. Maclachlan - 2013 - Mcgill-Queen's University Press.
How do we acquire knowledge through a sensory input from our environment? In The Enigma of Perception, D.L.C. Maclachlan revives the traditional causal representative theory of perception which dominated philosophical thinking for hundreds of years by revealing the important element of truth the theory contained. The traditional theory was not a complete explanation of perception, because it presupposed a causal system including both the physical objects and the subjective experiences. The pattern of inference from sensations to external objects, which lies (...)

The research is devoted to the analysis of the urgent problem of the information society: the overload of a person with information and, as a result, the impossibility of adequate formation and development of the personality; as well as the problem of "digitization" of human existence and the formation of a new reality of dataism. Theoretical basis. A lot of modern scientific works are devoted to the analysis of the information society, its problems and features. The information society is (...)
